The specific biological response of the surrounding tissues depends enormously on the surface characteristics of the particular biomaterial. Moreover mouth infections are currently regarded as the main reason why dental implants fail. Therefore, antibacterial properties are another requirement for preventing potential bacterial infection.
The multi-beam optical module developed within LASER4SURF, will be able to obtain functionalized metallic surfaces with textures around 1μm or less, enabling the required tolerances to reach the best cell adhesion and antibacterial properties. Thus, it will lead to extended implant life, reduced rejection and improved overall quality of life for patients.
